Mrs. Douglas, wife of the prominent actor Melvyn Douglas — who was prevented by commitments in California from being present — and nationally known for her career in the U.S. Congress and on the professional stage, began her reminiscences with a recitation of a movingly spoken short poem by Emily Dickinson, the nineteenth century American poetess for whose poetry Mrs. Douglas shared a deep admiration with Miss Fuller.
THEN FOLLOWED the reading of a telegram from ex-President and Mrs. Lyndon Johnson, which said: “Born before her time, Helen Fuller was an advance trumpet heralding us to awareness and compassion for all people.” We join you in honoring her memory, (signed) Lady Bird and Lyndon Johnson.”
The telegram will be framed and hung in the Library.
