Rural carrier retires
CHARLIE COMPTON, who served patrons of Rural Route 1, Amissville, for 31 years, has retired. Seldom did the rain, snow, sleet; etc. ever deter the dedicated “mailman” from his journey.
He has covered the most extensive route in the state, some 85 miles serving almost 400 households, for this length of time. When Mr. Compton first became associated with the U. S. Post Office Department, the office was housed in the small building beside Hackley’s Store and at that time the late Irwin Hackley was Postmaster.
The office was next moved to the former Latham store building in 1933 and Mrs. Ethel Cooksey became Postmaster. She has in recent years retired, and the position is presently held by Mrs. Alma Nethers.
From there the Post Office was moved to a new building in the late 40’s where it has remained until the past Saturday when it was moved again into a different part of the former Latham building now owned by Mrs. Francis Leonard. Lullwater Nur^ sery which had been located thgre has been reestablished at the Leonard farm on the Viewtown road.
