Mutual reminder
DURING THE PROGRAM for the late Helen Fuller held at the library last Saturday — a library which benefitted handsomely from the auction of the Fuller estate which followed — a man who is not of Rappahannock County, and who did not know anyone present to any great personal degree, felt compelled to add his thoughts to those that had been previously expressed.
This man from New York* told of how this was his first visit to the county, and of how the visit had made him aware of how much he had lost sight of in the grass roots strength of America. Whether he accomplished the purpose of his mission as an art buyer did not count so much, he said, as this lesson which had been impressed upon him.
It’s something thatJ all of us tend to take for granted. Here we are, living in the midst of one of the most beautiful landscapes on the face of the earth, among people many of us have known and worked with all our lives — how could we imagine what this man from one of the world’s mightiest cities had been missing from his own life?
WE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL, too, for what he said and how it should serve to remind us of how truly rich and fortunate we are to be in Rappahannock County^ in the highlands of rural Virginia, close to nature and our neighbors. Let’s try not to ever forget how fortunate we are. C
