many years. There is uo practical way to spray chestnut trees to control this disease. The chestnut blight is quite unique in that it does not attack young trees. As long as the bark remains smooth the fungus does not become established. The young sprouts which develop around the old stumps, and trees which grow from nuts, usually survive until the bark becomes rough and a few nuts are produced.
Chestnut trees are still found occasionally as sprouts around old stumps or as seedlings which grew from the few nuts a young tree produced before it died from the blight. People who find trees hope they have discovered a resistant plant which might help reestablish this desirable nut species. Unfortunately none of these sprouts or trees have been able to tolerate the disease.
