THE VIRGINIA Gold Cup, one of America’s classic steeplechases, had its 48th running at Warrenton, Saturday. Nearly 18,000 spectators saw a Maryland horse, Portobelo III, capture the trophy in an unusual race.
A freak mishap occured at the first of the 22 stiff timber fences when Ernest Oare’s saddle split in half and he had to pull up Allen B. J., who had been second in the Gold Cup last year and was this season’s winner of four straight races.
Mongogo’s Irish martingale caught on his run-out bit, causing him to bobble badly on the third, unseating jockey Willie Moore. Rokeby’s son of the famous Mongo continued riderless for three miles around the course, interfering with the leaders—Mrs. Ogden Phipps’ Vocalist, and Portobelo—but running and fencing in excellent form.
VOCALIST and Portobelo, former hurdlers and both in their fourth starts over timber, traded the lead position several times, followed closely by Harry Wight’s Hard Apple.
With a mile and a half remaining of the four mile course, Gilmore Flautt held Portobelo back to give his mount a breather and avoid the loose Mongogo. Then on the final lap with three fences left, he push
