ed the fleet chestnut, who had won the big timber race at the Orange County point -to-point last week, and they flew past Hard Apple, jumped the last fence head and head with Vocalist and romped home to win by a good six lengths.
Vocalist, eased up by Louis “Paddy” Neilson, was followed by Hard Apple, Duncan Patterson riding, who had a four length lead over the only other finishers, Mrs. Milton Polinger’s Idol Fellow and Randolph Rouse’s Eagle’s Tod.
The big money race of the day was the$10,000 Christopher T. Chenery Memorial hurdle haiidicap which had 12 good horses going to the post. Cringle led at the start with Antigua Star in hot pursuit.
Master Irish and his jockey, Charles “Skip” Achuff, took a hard fall at the first. Antigua Star also had tack problems, with a rein breaking, and ran off course. Jay’s Trouble took command at the second, and then Summer Crop went to the top until the sixth when Shameca showed the way.
Over the seventh, the water jump, it was Shameca leading followed by Cringle, Selkirk and Summer
Crop jumping together. The eighth fence was by-passed because jockey Achuff was still on the ground behind it. (He is reported in good condition at Fauquier Hospital
