OPENING the well-filled card of six races was the Fauquier Plate, maiden hurdles, which had 16 starters and 14 finishers. Country, High Scoring, and local horseman Witold Kuncewicz’s Muzzle Puzzle led over the first where Florida Fling fell.
Country continued to show his heels to the pack, opening a 15-length lead over The Badger, Kinda Bumpy and Marine Band. High Scoring went down at the fifth, and The Badger took over the lead on the eighth, crossing the wire five lengths ahead of Dr. Joseph Rogers on his Marine Band, who bested Mrs. William C. Wright’s Kinda Bumpy by half a length.
The winner, Raymond Guest’s iron gray fouryear-old, had raced over hurdles only once before, coming in second at Stoneybrooke two weeks ago.
THE $2,500 Old Dominion hurdles for amateur riders was a close and exciting race. El Kuntilla, Ask the Price, and Farmer’s Lot led by a small margin from the first of the 11 hurdles, and the order was the same as they flew over the fifth, the water
jump in front of the steward’s stand.
Farmer’s Lot and El Kuntilla went together from the seventh to the tenth fence. Then Artist’s Haven moved up and passed Ask the Price and El Kuntilla going over the last fence.
