JACOBSEN said the park occasionally increases its territory through land donated. ‘‘Justrecently, a fellow down in Madison has given us his farm, with the provision that he continues to live there for the rest of his life. It gives the donor a tax break, like any other easement, but the amount of tax relief varies with the kind of restrictions put on the gift.”
The Park will only accept land contiguous to it, Jacobsen said. ‘‘That’s a general rule. It might be possible to give something not adjacent if a right-ofway could be assured, but that would depend...The Park doesn’t want ‘islands.’”
A new master plan is being prepared for the Park, Jacobsen said. “It’s really an in-depth look at what we think the role of the Shenandoah National Park should be.”
