WE ARE fast nearing the climax of one of the most crucial and far-reaching environmental battles we will face in our lifetimes, the stubborn and ill-advised attempt of the Virginia Electric Power Company to thrust a monstrous 500,000 k.v. powerline across the heart of northern Virginia’s beautiful and historic countryside.
Involved are twelve scenic counties, hundreds of landowners and many thousands of Virginia residents who are justly appalled at the prospect of this massive and wholly inexcusable defacing of the good earth. The State Corporation Commission in Richmond, following prolonged public hearings and an independent study of proposed corridors, is expected to make its findings known in early summer.
Unless thousands of concerned Virginians take the time to articulate their strong opposition to this proposed Vepco land grab— for that is just what it would be—I very much fear that our cause is lost.
