Juveniles charged
with Orlean arson A NINETEENTH CENTURY abandoned farm house was totally destroyed by fire last Tuesday night. Three juveniles were captured near the scene and charged with arson and vandalism. The old farm house, built in 1886 by John Russell of Orlean, was located a few miles south of Hume on Route 688. For many years William E. Miller owned the house, called The Pines. The Orlean Volunteer Fire Department answered the call around 2 a.m. and worked the fire until 7:30 a.m. trying to keep the fire from spreading into the near by forest land. The vandals were caught leaving the scene. The car they were driving got stuck in a ditch, according to Henry F. Pearson. Trying to escape on foot, one was picked up by Sheriff’s Deputies on the road, the other was captured when he later returned to the fire and turned himself in. The Orlean Volunteer Fire Department is attempting to raise $16,00 for new equipment. The company formed less than two years ago.D
