As a recent newcomer to Rappahannock County I was appalled to learn of Vepco’s plans to erect yet another transmission line across our countryside. Will these be our forests of the future? Will our next generation grow up never seeing the unbroken sweep of a clean horizon?
The visual pollution of these stark towers is bad enough but there is increasing evidence that these new high voltage power lines may be harmful to life that surrounds them. One of the side products of high energy discharge into the atmosphere from uninsulated power lines is the formation of ozone. 0zone has been shown to damage vegetation from citrus groves in California to white pine forests'in the eastern United States. In addition, experimental laboratory animals chronically exposed to ozone show lung damage similar to emphysema, as well as an increased evidence of sterility, neonatal death and deformed offspring.
Similar results are thought to occur in humans exposed chronically to o
