AMONG THE EARLY ENTRIES for the A. P. “Paddy” Smithwick memorial hurdle handicap is Milton Ritzenberg’s Metello, winner of the season’s Dixie Circuit with victories at Atlanta and Tanglewood.
Mrs. Miles Valentine’s Lucky Boy II, winner of the Colonial Cup last fall under “Skip” Brittle, will be a strong challenger, as will Gran Khan, Mrs. F. Ambrose Clark’s winner at Middleburg, making a comeback under the training of Clarence Furr.
The Stratford-on-Avon, first race of the day, is a $2,500 maiden hurdle race. The British military attache will present the plate, a gift from the English race committee. The $2,000 Old Dominion maiden hurdle race is next. Following the Gold Cup is the two-mile Robert C. Winmill memorial hurdle race for $3,000 as well as the perpetual trophy. Final race of the afternoon is the $750 Virginia Thoroughbred Association flat race.D
