THE 49TH RUNNING of the Virginia Gold Cup races this Saturday in Warrenton should provide plenty of excitement. With a post time of 2:30 for the first race, there are six carded, including the classic Virginia Gold Cup timber steeplechase and the $10,000 A. P. Smithwick memorial hurdle handicap.
Several local horses are among the leading contenders for the coveted Virginia Gold Cup, a difficult four-mile test which carries no purse, only great prestige and a magnificent trophy. John Warner’s Annual Meeting, winner in 1969 and 1971, will be trying to retire the cup with a third victory over the 22-fence course. He easily won his only start this year, the Louis Leith Cup at Middleburg.
Rokeby Stables has entered Chapel Street and Mongogo, who have both been in the winner’s circle this spring. Chapel Street, who finished second to Annual Meeting in the 1971 Gold Cup, won his two starts this year, the open timber race at Old Dominion and the Middleburg Hunt Cup. Mongogo won the open timber races at Piedmont and Oatlands and was second last Saturday at Strawberry Hill.
