THE VIRGINIA Department of Highways and Transportation has cited “citizen opposition,” voiced at public hearings, for the department’s decision not to extend the dual-laning of Route 211 through Sperryville.
The Highway Department approved plans last week to four-lane 4.2 miles of Route 211 from the end of the Washington bypass to a point east of Sperryville. The western portion of the project, through Sperryville and up the mountain to Shenandoah National Park, will be left as is “until there is* a dire need,” according to a statement issued by the Highway Department.
Don Asken, resident engineer for the Highway Department in Fauquier and Rappahannock, said he interpreted the department’s news release to mean “the rest of the project will be% put on the back burner for' a long time.” In other words, there will be no grading, resurfacing or other improvements made inside the town, Askew said.
