CENTRAL Telephone Company of Virginia reached a milestone last Friday with the installation of a telephone in the residence of E. Wayne Rodgers in Martinsville. The installation marked the 200,000th company-owned telephone in Virginia, Central Vice President and Division Manager, D. H. Reid of Charlottesville said.
Central Telephone Company, formerly Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company, is a subsidiary of Central Telephone and Utilities Corporation and began operation in Virginia in 1931 when the company operated 9,250 telephones. Twenty-seven years later, in 1958, the company reached 50,000 telephones and the number increased to 100,000 telephones ten years later.
