Deer kill running
same as last year

AFTER TWO WEEKS of the season, the deer kill in Rappahannock appears to be running about the same as last year. Going ahead of last year’s pace during the first week, the number of deer checked dropped off Thanksgiving week.
Amissville and Flint Hill checking stations are still showing some increase from last year. Chester Gap and Washington are running about the same and the Sperryville area is down from a year ago.
The figures for the first twelve hunting days are as follows:

FIVE DEER WERE CHECKED during the bow season. Only three turkeys have been checked and all those were taken outside of the county. No bear have been checked. This is not too surprising under the circumstances, although a shutout at this stage was not predictable. Rappahannock had a big kill of bear last year, probably cutting into the surplus.
There were few reports of nuisance bear this past summer. The season was moved from a week before deer season to a week after deer season possibly putting the bear wise, which it was designed to do. Rappahannock may kill a few bear yet but in past years most bear were taken the week before and the first week of deer season. □
