A FAMILIAR scene in Rappahannock for the past few weeks has been great trailers loaded with tall pine trees lumbering along the highways. The delicate long-needled branches blowing in the wind appear to be waving a farewell, and indeed they are, as they make their way to a new home.
These specimen pines are a gift from Mrs. Paul Summers of The Shade near Washington, Va. to the LBJ Memorial Grove on the banks of the Potomac in Washington, D.C. She has contributed about 250 trees for the grove, which will cover 15 acres in the Lady Bird Park on Columbia Island. The grove will contain some 900 white pine trees when completed.
Following the death of her first husband, Raymond Wire, Mrs. Summers established The Shade Nursery in 1964 to help fill the void created bv his death Rows of evergreens, shruoDery and trees, dogwoods and others were set out, and with great care, have flourished in the ensuing years.
