THE 1975 hunting season is off to a good start, according to C. H. Shaffer, Game Management Field Coordinator for the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries. Turkey hunters are experiencing good success this season and the turkeys themselves are well fed due to a good mass crop in red and pin oaks. Grouse hunters are also doing well this year. This spring’s hatch was a good one, according to Shaffer, and hunters are now benefiting from this crop of grouse.
An excellent harvest is the report on deer hunting in areas west of the Blue Ridge. Shaffer reports that there are “lots of hunters” in this area and that the success ratio is high. Hunters on the eastern side of the mountains are having their best luck on the various military reservations which are open to hunting.
This is apparently going to be a fine year for the quail hunter in Virginia. Reports indicate that quail shooting is the best in several years and dedicated hunters should be able to find coveys enough to fill their bag in many ar
