SELECTING A CORN HUBRID—There were 94 different varieties of commercial hybrid corn tested at the Piedmont Research Station, Orange, Virginia in 1975. Twenty-one of these varieties were in the early maturity group and 73 were in the mid season. All varieties were planted on May 7, on the same soil type in i oplicas of three and seeded at a rate of 10% above the stand recommended by the various seed companies. The same rate of fertilization, 150 pounds of Nitrogen, 50 pounds of phosphate and 50 pounds of potash per acre was broadcast before planting. Two pounds of atrazine and one pound of prencep were applied cm May 6, the day before planting. Growing conditions were excellent.

The average yield for all mid-season varieties was 153.5 bushels per acre. The lowest yielding mid-season variety produced 118.6 bushels per acrp and the highest 189.9 bushels per acre. As you can see varieties make a difference.
