THE Rappahannock County School Board has adopted a $1,088,559 budget for 1976-77, a 7.4 percent increase of $75,129 over last year’s budget. Assistant Superintendent T. A. Fleetwood described tne Dudget as “reasonable,” adding that School Superintendent O.A. Norton and the School Board members had spent a lot of time working on it, leaving out requests for a number of desired appropriations, in order to come up with something fair.
Teacher salaries and other instructional costs make up the largest chunk of the proposed budget, accounting for $665,452 or 61.13 percent of the total. This is an eight percent increase over 197576.
School Board officials cite the need for salaries which are competitive with those of surrounding counties, in order to keep teachers in the county. According to the annual budget report prepared by the School Board for the Supervisors, a fourth of Rappahannock’s teachers commute from outside the county. Hie School Board feels that a competitive salary schedule may prevent the loss of some of the better and more experienced teachers.
The position of Director of Federal Programs was shared with Warren County last year. This year, Warren plans to make this a full time position for that county.
Youth drowns
A 13 year-old Rappahannock boy was drowned Sunday in the Shenandoah River in Page County. Steven Todd Jenkins, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jenkins of Washington, Va., was swimming with friends when be went under the water and never surfaced. His body was found by divers from the Waynesboro First Aid Crew later in the day.
