WHEN wine grape plantings were first begun in this area, some old-time farmers were openly skeptical—if not downright discouraging. Cattlemen, grain growers and orchardists were flatly doubtful of any commercial possibility in this quaint hobby activity.
Well, that was four or five years ago, and in the interim literally thousands of fine grape vines have been planted throughout this area, including Rappahannock County. A vineyard near Flint Hill has obtained a federal license and is selling its product as fast as it can turn it out; another is thriving near Middleburg.
