AN innovative approach to the growing problem of thistle infestation is being tried in neighboring Warren County with positive results. VPI extension agents, under the direction of entomologist Dr. Lr T. Kok, have been releasing the thistle head weevil, Rhinocyllus conicus, in areas plagued with bull, musk and plumeless thistles. Hie weevil feeds on the plant’s flower head, preventing the release of viable seed.
Valuable pasture is lost whenever thistles occur. According to Extension specialists, one thistle plant to 16 square feet reduces
