The first release of 500 weevils in Warren occured in 1969 on 50 acres heavily infested with thistles. “We didn’t see much happening until 1973,” said DeOms. “Now it’s hard to find over a couple hundred thistles on the 50 acres.”
DeOms said that thistles are not native to North America but were brought from Europe in the latter part of the eighteenth century. “There were no natural predators here so the thistles just took off and went! The thistle head weevil, imported from France, is the thistle’s natural predator.”
