HAIL STORMS last Friday and Saturday did substantial damage to the corn crops of some producers in Rappahannock County. The Rappahannock ASCS office administers a low yield disaster program that should be of interest to these affected farms.
It is important to note that the program applies only to the coni itself, not the stalk or leaves. If the corn turns sour or moldy as a result of the hail storm, then the farmer should contact the Rappahannock County ASCS office as soon as possible and file an application for a low yield Diaster Payment. If he decides not to harvest the crop and thinks he may qualify for a low yield disaster payment he should not destroy the crop residue before an inspection is made.
