In a telephone interview, Loftis said that Park officials are considering a "hands off' approach towards fire control in Wilderness Areas but stressed that the policy was only under consideration for the future and had not been implemented yet. He added that he didn't expect current policy to change anytime soon.
“We’d first have to do a lot of research, get public input, hold hearings and adopt a resource management plan” before any action was taken to change the existing practice of fighting Park fires where and when they occur," said Loftis.
