Passing competency tests in mathematics and reading will be a requirement for giaduation in addition to the completion of 18 units of English, mathematics, history, science and other couises now required before a high school diploma is awarded.

In adopting the program on June 23. the board postponed a decision on whether students who pass the competency tests in the ninth and tenth grades will be required to take similar tests in the twelfth grade.

The board, in related actions, also agreed:

—To permit school divisions that are already using other minimum competency tests in reading and mathematics to continue using them for the graduating classes of 1981 and 1982.
