Tenth graders are to be tested this fall because they will be the first graduating class affected by the General Assembly mandate that reading and mathematical skills be tested.
The program approved by the Board of Education, will require ninth-graders to take the reading and mathematics tests each year. Those who fail the tests will be given remedial work .
On the mathematics tests students will be required to read and write numerals correctly and to work with fractions and percentages, as well as to compute taxes, read a thermometer, make correct change in commercial transactions, and calculate net earnings. Tlte reading test will assess students’ ability to understand and draw conclusions from selected written materials as well as to locate information in a library, interpret a merchant’s bill, determine if a newspaper article presents fact or opinion, and follow directions listed on a product label.
