Mount Salem Church Restoration Association is the recipient of the Rap pahannock League for Environmental Protection • first award for community excellence. The honor was bestowed on the Association in recognition of its effective work in preserving and restoring the oldest church building in Rappahannock County, according to RLFP president Phil Irwin.
Built in the first quarter of the last century. Mt. Salem Baptist Church served as a house of worship and community meeting hall lor 125 years, before a dwindling congregation forced its closure. Vandals speeded the natural processes .if deterioration.
In 1976, as part of Rappahannock's Bi-Centennial observation. an interdenominational association was formed to restore the old building on Route 626 south of Washington. After just two years, Mt. Salem again enjoys the quiet dignity it once knew.
The interior has been repaired, replastered and repainted; the floor sanded; new windows and shutters installed; the roof waterproofed; and the original pews located and returned. The grounds have been cleared and landscaped, and a parking lot added to accommodate worshippers at the regular Sunday afternoon services held at 3 p.m.
