But then in mid-August a few clear dry days succeeded one another. The sun beat hotly on the forest of vines. All the tomatoes turned yellow and orange and then carmen. It was so dry for awhile that even those that lay on the earth, unprotected, matured without mud or worm blemish.
Within a week, a failing crop became a bountiful crop, unlike any other of recent years. Just a few vines yielded bucketful after bucketful of large, round, red, ripe and succulent fruit.
They’re piled on tables and kitchen counters, and the refrigerator shelves won’t hold any more.
It has been a year to remember, the year of the tomato. Know anyone who can use some?
