Answering the findings of a study made by Dr. Gio Gori, head of the smoking and health program at the National Institutes of Health. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Julius B. Richmond says there is no known safe level of smoking any cigarette of any type.
Dr. Gori’s findings have been widely publicized and his statements concerning no apparent risk in smoking certain numbers of 27 "low tar" brands of cigarettes have been challenged by physicians, including members of the Virginia Lung Association’s medical section, the Virginia Thoracic Society.
Dr. Richmond says. "While some cigarettes are less hazardous than others, there is no data anywhere in the large body of scientific evidence on the dangers of smoking that holds out any hope that there is such a thing as a safe cigarette or a safe level of smoking...
