Court House Fire Escape
County engineer Fanning Baumgardner reported that an outside fire escape, required at the court house to correct violations of the state fire code, will cost approximately $2,500. He said that the state fire marshal had agreed to allow the existing stairway leading from the upstairs courtroom to serve as one of the two exits required although it doesn’t conform to fire regulations.
The Supervisors agreed that an exterior fire escape in the rear of the court house on the side next to the new clerk’s office would be “least objectionable.” Second choice location decided on for the exit was towards the front of the building on the side next to the old clerk’s office. Baumgardner will relay the Supervisors’ choice for one outside fire escape to the state fire marshal for final approval. With regard to a related item concerning fire safety at the court house. Clerk Diane Bruce reported that fire , extinguishers for the building - had just arrived and would be immediately installed. In other business, the Supervisors voted unanimously to reappoint George Muth as Rappahannock representative on the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services Board.
