These insects congregate on rocks and dead trees on high places (usually mountain peaks), presumably in preparation for or in process of migration southward. Literally thousands of lady beetles (as they are more properly called) bunch together, sometimes covering an area of more than a square yard.
Very little is known about lady beetle migration. It would be tough to "band” these little animals in the manner that birds are banded to record migration movements. a This is the same predacious insect that is so beneficial to have in the home or homestead garden. In fact, packages of lady beetles are available through the mail from many garden supply sources. I suspect that the beetles are collected during these mas^ve migrations. This year’s appearance of insect ’’flocks”—walkingsticks. leafminers, cicadas, and lady beetles—have perhaps been suggestive of the Biblical plagues. But closer observances demonstrate that large numbers of insects are nature’s way. and often harmless to mankind.
