Underlying currents of hostility that have marred recent sessions of the Rappahannock School Board were not in evidence at Tuesday night's meeting. The credit rests with chairman Beverly Massie.
Mrs. Massie met last week with representatives of the Rappahannock County Education Association (RCEAI who had worked on committees to revise the teacher evaluation policy. By agreeing to the meeting, she broadcast loudly and clearly that the School Board DOES want input from its teachers.
Her attitude was in sharp contrast to the [x»sition the Board adopted at last month 's meeting when Mrs. Massie announced that the Board, acting at the suggestion of Superintendent William Bloomer, would give little weight to RCEA proposals on the revisions to evaluation policy. Her statement met with understandable resentment from the teachers. No one likes to be told that their opinions count for nothing.
The Board’s attitude was particularly hard for teachers to take since they were asking for more frequent observations, additional evaluations and added assistance in correcting errors in teaching techniques uncovered by the monitoring.
Mrs. Massie justified the Board's position by noting that RCEA representatives had served on the committees at the elementary and high -ciiools that had drawn up suggestions on evaluation for the administration to review and forward to the School Board. Teachers, however, were concerned that many of their ideas had been deleted by the administration. In addition, they wanted time to review and comment on the final evaluation policy presented to the Board for adoption.
On Tuesday. Mrs. Massie instigated action by the Board to give the teachers that extra time. The Board voted to table action on the evaluation policy until the January meeting and instructed the administration to see that all members of the RCEA committees received final copies of the proposals for comment._ Any new RCEA suggestions will be forwarded to the Superintendent in time to be included in the School Board members' in
