at Madison Mills has been changed to December 19. This is one week earlier because of Christmas. BEEF CATTLE LICE - Scribbled on my Christmas Calendar is a note to remind cattlemen about lice control. Most cattle herds are sleek and healthy, but with near ideal conditions, it is possible to have some whopping big lice populations by late December or early January. Recommended pour-ons for lice control include Ronnel (Korlan) or Fenthion (Lysoff). Be sure to read the label carefully, mix and apply according to directions. .
VIRGINIA’S 208 PLAN - WHAT IS IT? . . . The 208 Plan is Virginia’s program to satisfy Section 208 of public law 92-500 passed by Congress in 1972. It’s purpose is to eliminate point and nonpoint sources of water pollution. Nonpoint sources are of main concern to us. Nonpoint sources are those sources whose exact point of entry into a water course cannot be defined. Examples are rainfall runoff, percolation and seepage from agricultural, urban, forest and industrial areas. A handbook on agricultural, “Best Management Practices," is being prepared. This handbook will outline a wide range of suggested management practices. Included will be methods of conservation, tillage, contour farming and crop rotation. Means of animal waste disposal and pesticide and chemical control also are high-lighted in the handbook. A draft copy of the handbook is available in the Extension Office if you would like to review its contents. Virginia is one of only a few states that has been allowed to operate a nonregulatory 208 program.
