Peter Luke explained that the contract on the church, valued at $32,000, will be assigned to the town and, in turn, he and his wife will take title to the fire hall. Annual payments made by the Lukes for the fire hall will equal the amount of the town’s payments on the church so the town won’t have to spend any extra funds for the building, Luke noted.
The transaction will benefit both parties, he continued, since the town wants the church but doesn’t want to spend any money for it while, for the Luke’s purposes, the fire hall is much more suitable for renovating into office space. In order for the church to be remodeled into law offices, arrangements would first have to be made to lease or purchase land for a septic field so bathrooms could be installed. The town, if it wanted to put toilet facilities in the church, wouldn’t face this problem since the monument lot next door, which the town already owns, could be used for the field.
