The same month, the Washington Post carried a UP1 story on laboratory evidence strongly supporting the belief that breast cancer susceptibility is inherited in some families where the disease is common. The article reported the discovery by Dr. Mary-Claire King, a geneticist at the University of California School of Public Health at Berkely, of a gene that serves as a “flag" for a human chromosome on which the cancer gene is apparently located. According to the Post, the gene’s presence can be identified by looking for its product, glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT), in a simple blood test. The article notes that the GPT gene itself has nothing to do with cancer except that it provides a way to spot the presence of the second gene that increases the susceptibility to the disease in certain familities.

New avenues of research are showing such promising results that Cancer News, the quarterly publication of the American Cancer Society, now includes two pages of research reports.

According to Martin and information from ACS, certain types of cancer have almost surrendered to medical experts. Childhood cancers. skin cancers, hemotological and gynological cancers have all yielded to three-pronged treatment of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. “The prognosis is good for those types but some still have an absolutely horrible prognosis,” said Martin, specifically noting esophogeal, pancreatic and lung cancers. He added, however, that survival is due to the inherent characteristics of the tumor itself. "Some grow slowly and some advance very rapidly,” he explained.
