The essence of Emily Jane Hilscher will live on if the guests who attended a lavish benefit dinner Saturday have anything to do with it.
Some 140 Rappahannock residents forked over $100 each to dine on an elaborate four-course dinner which was cooked and catered by Rappahannock high school's current and former culinary arts students.
The festive evening featured Rappahannock wines paired with each course and an auction of items appealing to horse lovers and gourmet buffs. It was held at the old Washington School on Mt. Salem Avenue in Washington.
The dinner was the idea of chef and culinary arts teacher Mary Arthur who said, simply, she wanted to do something for Emily. It cleared $25,000 for the Emily Jane Hilscher Passion Award fund which already had $15,000.
The award was named after Emily, a 2006 graduate of Rappahannock County High School, who was the first of 32 victims in the shootings at Virginia Tech in April a year ago. Those who knew her frequently remark
