The folks over at Stonewall Abbey, the new cafe and gift shop on Main Street in Sperryville, have taken their new business one step at a time, and they don’t see their journey ending anytime soon.
This past Saturday was its grand opening in a 105-year-old building that originally was the Episcopal Church in Sperryville. But the cafe had been open for business for the previous week.
“[The opening has gone] pretty well, pretty busy. Last weekend was exceptionally busy with the long weekend,” said Donna Compton, who is in charge of the kitchen.
She and her husband, David, and son Brian, 28, of Amissville have followed their dream to open the cafe in the old church.
The Comptons purchased the building in January 2007, a few weeks after the Old Sperryville Bookshop closed at the end of the previous year. That was step one, with a timeconsuming next step to follow. The church shell that houses the cafe is an historic building, which makes for a slow renovation process.
“Most of what we did is under the building,” said Donna Compton referring to the wiring and plumbing for the redone kitchen and bathroom.
The most obvious additions on the outside include a new front entrance where the original door to the church was, a wheelchair ramp, and a patio for outside dining.
