But not for long. One evening when all was quiet, and the proprietor was congratulating himself on the classy place he was running, something like the muffled report of a dynamite cartridge butted in to Interrupt his meditations. A second report followed immediately and before my friend got half way down the cellar stairs on a tour of investigation, a third and louder explosion brought him back with a face that showed both alarm and amazement.
