inirty tnousand lespedeza bicolor'plants were received in Culpeper Tuesday for distribution to farmer in that county and in Rappahannock. The bi-cok>r plants are planted as woodland borders adjacent to cropland to provide wildlife food ■ and cover. Any farmer in the Culpeper soil conservation district who has developed a complete soil and water conservation plan for his farm in po-operation with the district is eligible to receive an allotment of plants.

Farmers in .Rappahannock who will establish borders of bi-color lespedeza include: A. C. Hensley, Castleton; W. H. Cannon, Castleton; Wr* R. Williamson, Woodville; Dick Latham, Ben Venue; W. B. Dolph, Washington; and Col. R. M. Munro, Laurel Mills.

The plants are made available to the soil conservation district through a co-operative plan with the Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries in Virginia. The local gair^e wardens will assist Soil Conservation Service technicians in distributing plants to the various farms and ini working

with farmers in proper^ establishing their borders.

For a numbelr of years the Commission of Game' and Inland Fisheries has been stocking quail to increase the population. However, through experimental evidence they now find that this ■method is not satisfactory as the quail that are turned loose do not survive. It appears that the best method is to provide adequate food plots to tide them over the severe winter months. Bi-color lespedeza holds seed all winter, thereby allowing the birds to feed during the time the ground is covered with snow.
