Survey Shows Storage
Lack; High Corn Yield
Only about 12 per cent of the total storage capacity for corn on Virginia farms is considered rat-proof, as shown by a recentlv^eompleted survey of about one in every SO farms in the state.
Fiona other sources comes the estimate that lack of rat-proof storage means the loss of several hundred pounds of grain, on the average farm, each year.
I>r. Boyd Harshbarger, statistician for the Virginia Experiment Station, reporting on the survey, said that farm storage facilities for ear corn are available for more than 41,000,000 bushels in wooden-frame buildings; but storage in metal buildings is available for only slightly more than 2,000,000 bushels' Other types of available farm storage, including concrete and cinder block, have a capacity for about 1,700,000 bushels.

The survey W’as conducted with funds from the Production and Marketing Admipistration under the Research and Marketing Act of 1946, the Experiment Station, and the Division of Markets of the Virginia Department of Agriculture. Participating in the survey was the Vii'ginia Co-operative Crop Reporting Service.
The surveyors also were seeking information on production methods of corn and small g.alns, amoant of these grains axailahl,. for sale, farm and commercial storage facilities, and u®e of hvbride corn seed. .•
