These summer music festivals bring the regular musicians who play with the Virginia Orchestra, as well as instructors and talented young music students. These musicians enjoy a summer camp and use the free summer weeks foe_1 ~ltudy and rehearsaL The hope of Mr. Hanker, conductor and director, is that Virginia musicians will not have to seek and out-ofstate music camp, but that one can be established in Virginia and grow to the fame of some of the_ camps in other states.
It has been reported that while in the county Mr. and Mrs. Hanker examined the old mill between—' Washington and Massie’s Corner (known as Baggarly’s Old Mill) and they were very favorable in their comment^. This building could not be put in ehape for use this summer, however, and perhaps one of the school buildings might have to be used the first season. It is also reported that the old woolen mills at Laurel Mills had been offered for inspection as a possible site, but Mr, Haaker did not have time to inspect this property before he had to return to Richmond.
Several other counties in the state have volunteered to do anything necessary in order to have this summer colony located in their-county, but Rappahannock’* natural beauty and its location so. close to Skyline Drive give it a preference.
Rappahannock, in order to have this summer music festival located within its borders, has one requirement. The county must provide, a reasonable number of memberships in the Virginia Orchestra Guild at the price of $3 per membership and there is no restriction as to territory.
