Of course, we were glad that young musicians were to be encouraged in their studies; in fact, we are glad for all the encouragement it brings to anyone. Somebody was going to get The summer music festival located in their county, and a few local folks thought Rappahannock might as well be the place. »
But the biggest joke of all seems to lie in Washington’s getting publicity for being the “guiding spirit” which brought about this locating the State orchestra in the county. The original meeting of planning—an interview and discussion between Mr. and Mrs. Haaker and some local citizens— took place near the one-and-only, original, “First Sperryville of Them All” with about eight or ten Sperryvillians present and a couple of Woodvillians. To put it mildly, the meeting was tastefully decorated with the conspicuous absence of all Washingtonians.
Well, let’s say that the Sperryvillians and Woodvillians know a good thing when they see it, and after getting the thing introduced properly, they just turn the work over to Washington and let the lady mayor and the illustrious village of antiquity reap the reflected glory.
But who has time to get all upset about it? Just bring on the concerts. W'e’ll all go down to the Avon Mill and listen to our heart’s content—whether the photogenic lady-mayor started the train roll- 8 ing or just jumped on the caboose in time to be present.
