A committee composed of T. W. Newman, J. N. Doffermyer and Rev. A. M. Grimsley organized the church on October 24, 1886 at Viewtown, Virginia. Elder Grimsley was elected as moderator and W. R. Nelson, church clerk.

The church was known as Chestnut Grove Baptist Church for a few years. Charter members of the congregation number 10 men and 12 women. Deacons elected were James Goff, J. N. Doffermyer, James Smith.

The present building was constructed in 1887 and remodeled in 1907 with an addition to the original building. John S. Hughes gave the lumber and the members went to the woods to cut the timber. Enough tin for a new roof was given by John Smith. A large stained glass window was given by Margaret Hughes as a memorial. Additional property was given the church for a cemetery by W. W. Newman. Recently Venetian blinds, a pulpit railing and flower stands were given—as memorials. Several dozen hymnals were given last year by the members. W. A. Sunday School meets every week and church services are held on first and third Sundays. The following have served as pastors: 'J. N. Doffermyer, T. P. Brown, S. W. Cole, B. N. McFadden, Charles Clements, John St. Clair, A. C. Walker, Jr., Louis Broughman and the present pastor, M. E. Sliger.
