New asphalt and rubbber tile floors are smooth, shiny, and attractive, but jbhey quickly become shabby and worn when they are not protected. ' That’s the warning from Ruth Jamison, house furnishing specialist at V.P.I., who says the only practical maintance finish for them is self-polishing wax. Dbn’t use paste wax on asphalt and rubber tile. Asphalt tile is an extremely hard flooring, but the asphalt ingredient softens when it comes irt contact with solvent. . . the liquid used for thinning paste wax. Rubber tile also is made of an ingredient that absorbs solvent used in polisning wax, resulting in swelling of the iloor.

Bleeding colors can be cleaned with a commercial floor cleaner, which when mixed with water and applied to the floor will help remove loose dye. If the floor is pitted (but not too deep) because solvent wax or an oil has been used, you can use #1 or No- 2 steel wool to cut the floor back where it is hard and shows a certain amount of sheen.
