Training is considered essential to all nurses, whether active or retired, in order that they may be able to participate in the Civilian Defense program in time of disaster. Miss Faulkner urges those who have not filled out enrollment cards to do so now in order that they will be ready for training as soon as classes are organized. f The manuel, “A Guide For Teaching Basic Information to Professional Nurses in the Defense Against Atomic Warfare,” is used in the training course. This teaching guide was prepared by the Committee on Nursing Service for Chilian Defense, composed of those nurses who attended the institute on Nursing Aspects of Atomic Warfare held in Atlanta, Georgia, in January of this year, with the assistance of advisors from the State Health Department and the Graduate Nurses Association of Virginia. Many requests for this manual have been received, according to Dr. Shanholtz. It has been sent to Civilian Defense authorities in each state, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Alaska, Guam and Canada, as well as two agencies of the Federal government and state libraries.
