Soil Conservation Service Technicians assisted four fanners in Culpeper and Rappahannock counties in laying off and marking their contour lines this week. T.R. Griffin, of Griffinsburg established contour lines on 30 acres; Aubrey Cloud, Castleton, 15 acres; M. L. Blankenbaker, Laurel Mills, 40 acres and R. E. “Dick” Jones,
Contour lines are located on the fields prior to establishing crop rotations in contour strips. Rotations in contour strips on sloping fields prevent loss of Valuable top soil and rainfall. Contour farming means farming on the level thus making the job easier for both < power and horse drawn equipment. Power equipment operated on the contour requires from 15 to 30VeT less fuel and operating cost than when farming up and down hill in square of rectangular fields. Those who have been farming the conservation way say that“rotation” in contour strips pay their way many, many times, in saving soil, fertility, rainfall and the cost of producing a bushel of- corn; small grain or a ton of hay.”
New farm plans were developed by three fai’mers in cooperation with the Culpeper Soil Conservation District and assisted by Soil Conservation Service Technicians. Included in the group were: G.A. Burgers, Washington, C. G. Sudduth, Remington. R. E. Jones, Culpeper, revised his farm plan to include additional land.
