The story is told of a wealthy bachelor who, as the years went by, became tired of choosing wedding presents for innumerable nieces and daughters of friends. He noticed that they usually received a dozen ashtrays and five or more cocktail sets. He was mildly ashamed of his own choices. So he visited a famous jewelry store and asked if they had something on hand that nobody could possibly want. In the basement they found a horrible silver vase. He wrote on his card, “If you don’t like this, 'take it back and get anything you want.” Then he instructed the store to permit exchange up to $25. «
The vaae settled his problem. It did service for many years, always returning to the store and going out again with the identical card.
