The Brush Burning Lew went Into effect in the County as of March 1, stated Chief Forest Warden Raymond M, Johnson of Rappahannock County, He also stated that it was his responsibility to enforce this law in the county as a representative of the Virginia (Forest Service.
Briefly, this law states that setting of fire to brush, grass, leaves or other inflammable material is illegal within 300 feet of woodland or brush land in the county between March 1 and May 15 of each year, except between the hours of 4 rOO p.m. and midnight. If convinced of violating this law, a fine of not less than $10.00 or more than $100.00 can be imposed by the Trial Justice of the county. Also, if a forest fire is allowed to start from such burning, the responsible party is liable to the county for suppression of the fire.
The Virginia Forest Service records show that each year approximately 30% of the forest fires in the State are caused by careless burning, either in violation of the Brush Burning Law or during other periods of the year when this law is not in effect.
