Stem ret appears first in new
for disease development, planting* in the. fall when the plants are still small. Heavily infected leaflets drop and may he overrun by a white moldy growth. The infection latSer spreads downward to the roots and crown. In the spring, it is common to find a soft rot on the crown and roots. The new growth of infected plants frequently wilts and the dead tissues may be overrun by a heavy white mold- Somewhat later, these dense white moldy growths at the base of the stems become transformed into irregular hard black bodies called sclerotia. These sclerotia are sometimes as targe .as a pea and provide a positive diagnosis of the disease. In the late fall and early spring, these sclerotia develop fruiting structure which produce many spores. These, spores are blown through the air and cause new infections on nearby clover and alfalfa plants.
